Uniondale, NY – July 18, 2025
A disturbing lawsuit was filed today in New York State Supreme Court, Nassau County, alleging gross violations of patient privacy at the Northwell Health Sleep Disorders Center in Great Neck, NY. The complaint accuses Northwell Health, Inc., along with its affiliates including Northwell Health Physician Partners, of negligence, gross negligence, unlawful surveillance and invasion of privacy after one of its employees, Sanjai Syamaprasad, allegedly installed hidden spy cameras disguised as smoke detectors inside multiple bathrooms and other private areas in their medical facilities.
The civil action, brought by The Rizzuto Law Firm, represents Kenneth Mitchell, a patient who visited the Northwell Sleep Disorders Center in February 2024. Mitchell was later notified via formal letter from Northwell Health Physician Partners that he had been secretly recorded without his knowledge or consent —an act he describes as deeply traumatic and dehumanizing.
The complaint also alleges that Northwell Health and its affiliates failed to properly vet, train, and supervise their employee, creating a dangerous environment for unsuspecting patients, including adults and minors.
“This is more than just a violation of privacy—it’s a violation of human dignity,” said Phil Rizzuto, attorney for the plaintiff and founder of The Rizzuto Law Firm, a leading personal injury and civil rights law firm based in Long Island & Westchester.
“The expectation of privacy in a medical facility—especially in a restroom or private patient area—is among the most sacred rights we hold. To be secretly filmed by someone employed by a trusted healthcare provider is not only illegal, it is one of the most humiliating betrayals imaginable. Unfortunately, in our legal system, the only way to hold individuals and institutions accountable for such egregious misconduct is through financial compensation.”
This case is one many lawsuits related to the Northwell spy camera scandal, which has sparked outrage across Nassau County and beyond. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that Syamaprasad installed cameras in at least nine different bathrooms throughout the facility, secretly recording over 13,000 patients and staff members—some of whom were children.
